Strategies to Create Fair and Equitable Work Arrangements

With only 12% of employees reporting a preference to return to the office, employers need to have a process in place to determine flexible work arrangements.

Prior to the pandemic, flexible work arrangements were typically granted in special cases, however two years later, hybrid workplaces are now the norm. The challenge employers are facing is determining how to manage what portion of their workforce can and should be remote. Julie Voges, Regional Managing Director, HR Consulting, spoke with HR Executive regarding the importance “for employers to have a process to review and evaluate who is eligible to work remotely and the criteria that determine(s) eligibility.” In the article “The top reasons to tread carefully with your return-to-office plans” Julie suggests that employers lead with empathy when discussing return to work plans with their employees to ensure that all employees feel safe and supported.

It’s critical for employers to have a process to review and evaluate who is eligible to work remotely and the criteria that determine eligibility. After all, it’s a slippery slope to just ‘give in’ to employees’ remote work requests. Employers should ensure that they consistently enforce their policies to avoid any potential discrimination claims.
