June - Be Open (to new beginnings)

“When one door closes, another door opens, but we so often look regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” – Alexander Graham Bell

As we kick off June with the end of the school year and summer preparations, many of you, like me, are experiencing transitions in your schedules and maybe even in your daily lives. Personally, I find myself in a major transition with my youngest son Eric graduating from high school as Adrienne and I prepare to be empty nesters after 20 years of raising our two boys. In addition, I’ve also decided to take a step back from another major activity – coaching high school lacrosse. Many of you know, it’s one of my greatest passions outside of work and family and for the past five years, I’ve juggled my schedule, kept late nights and fielded many players and parent calls so I could be involved in a major capacity in a sport that my sons and I love. It’s not just the sport and the competitive aspect that I love… coaching and mentoring these young men has meant more to me than I could have ever imagined. When I was first approached with the opportunity, I seriously questioned whether this change in my life was going to be manageable. OneDigital was experiencing tremendous growth and I knew that both would require a high degree of devotion and attention. Ultimately, I decided to follow my heart and passion and, now, I could not imagine my life without this experience. Two weeks ago, we played our final game of another successful season in the state semi-final playoffs, and I walked off the field arm-in-arm with an inspiring group of young men that I know will go on to do incredible things in their lives. More than the great success we experienced as a team and a program over the past several years, I will most cherish the hard work, friendships, laughs and tears that I shared with over 100 young men as they learned lessons in leadership, trust, teamwork and life skills. While I take such pride in the growth I have seen in so many of these young men, I know in my heart that this old coach will walk away with much more from this experience than I even put into it. I have little doubt that I gained more perspective, more balance and more compassion in my life, and I hope I have become a better leader from this experience. While I walk away with mixed emotions, I have no regrets as I look forward to new beginnings and new doors for me to walk through.

I know so many of you are going through your own life transitions whether it be at work or in your personal lives. Marriage, divorce, new parents, empty nesters, new roles and new companies all represent the closing of one door and the opening of another. I’m reflecting on all the new offices and teams that have joined OneDigital over the past few years and am inspired by your resilience and openness to embrace this change so confidently and seamlessly.  Change can be hard, but I believe it’s our openness to embrace and fully experience these new opportunities that can make life so rewarding. Look no further than OneDigital to see how change and “new beginnings” can lead to great success if you approach it with optimism, an open mind and an open heart.

So, as I approach this transition in my life and my family, I look forward, not backward, with great excitement for the new doors that I know will open and with tremendous optimism for the journey ahead. At the center of this is the anticipation of what the future will hold for my two eager (and hopefully well prepared) sons, as well as my passion and confidence in OneDigital’s continued growth and success. While I’m sure my wife and our leadership team here at OneDigital are anxious for me to find new hobbiesJ, for now my thoughts are filled with new ideas and opportunities to continue this eventful journey.

Whatever change and transition you may be experiencing, I encourage you to not reflect too long on the past, but rather to BE Open with optimism and enthusiasm as together we look for new doors to walk through and new experiences to embrace! I’m so grateful to share these experiences with all of you, and I look forward with excitement to many new beginnings!
